Advisor to Executive Vice President for Business Administration
Peter Barnes serves as advisor to the executive vice president for business and administration. Since beginning this role in 2018, he has provided invaluable strategic guidance and insight to Emory administrative leadership. In addition, Barnes is recognized for his consulting and advisory contributions to the Executive Compensation and Conflict-of-Interest subcommittee of the Board of Trustees, as well as to Emory Healthcare. He also frequently staffs executive and academic leadership searches and recruitment. Barnes served as the interim EVP for Business and Administration from 2016 to 2017.
In his role as an expert advisor, Barnes draws on years of experience working in human resources for higher education institutions. He joined Emory in 2005 as vice president of human resources, wherein he guided human resources strategy, practices, functions, programs, and policy. He also led the coordinated efforts of benefits, compensation, recruiting, and employment, as well as faculty and staff assistance through employee support and assistance programs, recognition, and work-life programs. Barnes’ contributions to talent and leadership development at Emory not only supported organizational effectiveness at the university broadly, but also earned Emory recognition in the higher education community as a leader in organization leadership development.
Prior to Emory, Barnes served as senior vice president for a large administrative division of the UNC Health Care System, which included human resources. He also served as the compliance co-officer and director of graduate medical education for the University of North Carolina Hospitals. While at UNC, Barnes worked in a variety of human resource and executive leadership roles spanning a 30-year career.
A member of the national board of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources for three years, Barnes was active on the budget, finance, and public policy committees of that board, as well as heading a think-tank task force on human resources transformation. He holds a BA in biology and English from UNC–Chapel Hill, where he studied as a James M. Johnson Scholar.
