Peter Barnes
Vice President for Human Resources

Barnes joined Emory in 2005 as vice president of human resources. He came from the University of North Carolina (UNC), where he was senior vice president for a large administrative division of the UNC Health Care System, which included human resources, while also serving as the compliance co-officer and director of graduate medical education for the University of North Carolina Hospitals. While at UNC, Barnes worked in a variety of human resource and executive leadership roles spanning a 30-year career.

As vice president of human resources at Emory, Barnes served in an executive leadership role guiding human resources strategy, practices, functions, and policy. The human resources function establishes policy and process standards for the University centrally, with transactional work done locally. It also coordinates the departments associated with benefits, compensation, recruiting and employment, and faculty and staff assistance through employee support and assistance programs, recognition, and work-life programs. Human resources at Emory also provides extensive talent, manpower, and leadership development programming—along with mentoring, organizational development, and employee relations functions—to support organizational effectiveness. In this regard, Emory is a leader in higher education and frequently cited as the benchmark for organization leadership development.

Barnes is recognized for his strategic, advisory and consulting role to the University’s administrative and academic leadership, to the Executive Compensation and Conflict-of-Interest subcommittee of the Board of Trustees, as well as to Emory Healthcare. Moreover, he frequently staffs executive and academic leadership searches and recruitment.

A member of the national board of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources for three years, Barnes was active on the budget, finance, and public policy committees of that board, as well as heading a think-tank task force on human resources transformation.

Barnes holds a BA in biology and English from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, where he studied as a James M. Johnson Scholar.
